WELCOME ADDRESS OF THE DIRECTOR

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the official website of Pan African University Life and Earth Sciences Institute (PAULESI), University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria. PAULESI is one of the four operational Institutes of the Pan African University. The Pan African University (PAU) is a continental initiative of the African Union Commission, Addis Ababa to revitalize Higher Education and Research in Africa. The PAU has five Institutes located in each of the five sub-regions of Africa. The Institutes are Life and Earth Sciences Institute (including Health and Agriculture) at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria; Governance, Humanities, and Social Sciences at University of Yaoundé II, Cameroon; Science, Technology and Innovation at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kenya; Water and Energy (including Climatic change) at University Tlemcen, Algeria and the Institute of Space Sciences, South Africa (which is yet to kick start).  

The Pan African University Life and Earth Sciences Institute (Including Health and Agriculture), PAULESI which is located within the University of Ibadan serves as the hub for West Africa and offers postgraduate degrees in the following thematic areas: Life Sciences, Earth Sciences, Health Sciences and Agricultural Sciences. The PAU nurtures quality, exemplifies excellence and admits African students from all over the continent including the Diaspora. Since its Inception in 2014, PAULESI has graduated eight set of Doctor of Philosophy students and nine set of Master’s students.   

We all at PAULESI are committed to fulfilling the mission of the Pan African University; to strengthen Africa’s higher education and research, address quality, improve intra-African collaboration, foster innovation and links with industries and the social sector, produce a critical mass of high-quality intellectual capacity  for the continent and ultimately serve as a model for quality education.

PAULESI as a high performance rated institution, provides an enriching academic ambience where students can productively engage in learning and research under the guidance of distinguished academics and support staff from around the world, who play several roles as teachers, instructors, supervisors, advisors, mentors and many more.  The academic community in PAULESI is unique in so many ways and characterised by a rich cultural diversity, as we host individuals from various backgrounds, cultures and tribes from all parts of Africa and other continents.  We strive to foster mutual respect and support each other in our shared goal of making the African continent great.

These are pivotal times for the African continent and we believe that PAULESI students, alongside our fellow Institutes will play a crucial role in establishing a strong foundation for higher education and research on the continent. Together, we aim to contribute significantly to the mission of the Pan African University and align with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which envisions transforming Africa into a global powerhouse. We are assured of the continued support for this vision from the African Union, host countries, and various partners, as we work towards the development of skilled human resources that will contribute to Africa’s capacity building in achieving the AU Agenda 2063 – The Africa We Want.
